Abductor hallucis muscle (anatomy)

The abductor hallucis is one of the intrinsic muscles of the foot within the first, most plantar layer.

It originates from the:

  • medial process of the calcaneal tuberosity
  • flexor retinaculum
  • plantar aponeurosis

It passes on the medial side of the foot to insert into the:

  • medial sesamoid bone of the hallux
  • medial side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux

Its actions are to:

  • flex the big toe
  • abduct the big toe
  • support the medial longitudinal arch

Abductor hallucis in innervated by the medial plantar nerve (S2, S3).
