Investigations

Authoring team

The investigations necessary for breast reduction surgery may include:

  • blood tests:
    • FBC
    • group and save
    • other tests as directed by medical co-morbidities eg electrolytes, random glucose
    • in patients with as strong personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer, genetic screening for susceptibility genes such as BRCA
  • imaging; this is contentious but many surgeons will send a patient for a pre-operative mammogram if they are over the age of 40 years or have a strong personal or family history of breast cancer
  • photography; recommended for pre-operative planning
