Chylous effusion
Chylous effusions may occur for a variety of reasons, most commonly, trauma, malignancy, primary lymphatic deformities due to hyperplasia or megalymphatics, and filariasis.
The clinical picture depends on the underlying cause of the effusion. Irrespectively, however, urgent action is required because of the nutritional and immunological implications of loss of protein and lymphocytic rich fluid.
