has internal and external components:
internal component - body containing decoder and a magnet, and a band of electrodes that are inserted into the cochlea; each electrode delivers sounds of varying pitch and loudness
external component - microphone worn behind the ear, speech processor and transmitter coil. The microphone receives the sound and sends it to the speech processor. The speech processor selects and codes useful sounds. The code is then sent to the transmitter which sends code to the receiver which converts the code to electrical signals which are sent to simulate hearing nerve fibres. The signals are recognised as 'hearing' by the brain
