Mild HE accounts for 90% of cases of HE. It is characterised by:

  • absence of anaemia and splenomegaly
  • mild haemolysis is typical, however 10-20% show moderate haemolysis which is possibly due to concomitant infection or splenomegaly due to other diseases
  • reticulocyte count of 1-4% of total red blood cells
  • prominent elliptocytes in peripheral blood smear

No treatment is necessary.
