Pathological bereavement reaction
Bereavement may be considered pathological if:
- prolonged - denial is usually overcome in two months; anger by six months and depression by twelve months
- guilt is more than transitory
- the patient is unable to talk about their feelings
- the patient is suicidal or looks forward to joining the dead person.
