Use checklists:
- congenital; acquired: trauma, infection, inflammation, metabolic, haematological, degenerative, psychological or iatrogenic ('the surgical sieve')
- systems: CVS, RS, GIS, UGS, CNS, musculoskeletal, haematological etc (can also use hospital departments)
- anatomical: eg for chest pain - skin, muscle, bones, pleura, lungs, heart, oesophagus and stomach
- the RCGP triad: physical, psychological and social
