Inspection: With the patient standing - look for genital warts, mild hypospadias, balanitis, circumcised or not - ought also to inspect the perianal area for genital warts Palpation: - beginning with the inguinal lymph nodes - drain the skin, may be enlarged in herpes or in generalised lymphadenopathy of HIV - scrotum - feeling for testicular swellings, discomfort epididymis. Note, it's important to count two testes. Tests: - urethral swabs - for gonococcus and chlamydia - the two glass test - passing the first 2 inches of urine into one glass, the rest into another to distinguish urethritis and cystitis - serology for syphilis - Hep B and HIV testing, after counselling for HIV
