TIPPS
This radiological technique for treating acute variceal bleeding may be considered in patients with intractable or recurrent acute variceal haemorrhage.
It involves creating a shunt between the portal and sytemic circulations under radiological guidance via a transjugular approach.
Its advantages include the avoidance of surgery which has a mortality of 10%
- however encephalopathy eventually occurs in 20% of cases and the rebleed rate is high at over 25% at one year (1)
