The contraceptive sponge is a relatively unreliable form of barrier contraception. For every 100 women who use it very carefully and consistently, 9 will get pregnant within a year. With less careful and consistent use, this figure may rise to 25 per 100.
The sponge is made of polyurethane and is usually, impreganted with spermicide. It is soft, circular, comes in one size - about 5 cm in diameter - and has a small loop to aid removal.
