Pancytopaenia

Pancytopaenia describes the situation in which all three elements of the blood - red cells, white cells and platelets - are reduced.

Common causes include:

  • bone marrow failure
  • hypersplenism
  • severe megaloblastic anaemia
  • paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria
  • systemic lupus erythematosus
