Types of seizure patterns

There are two key groups of seizure:

  • partial seizures:
    • simple partial seizures: awareness preserved, EEG shows unilateral paroxysmal activity during attack
    • complex partial seizures: awareness is impaired, there are bilateral EEG abnormalities during the attack

  • generalised seizures:
    • the seizure may be generalized from the outset or may start as a partial seizure
