Alcoholic hepatitis

Alcoholic hepatitis follows a binge of ethanol consumption.

Histologically there is necrosis of hepatocytes, especially those close to the central vein of each lobule. There is polymorphonuclear lymphocyte infiltration and there may be deposition of Mallory's hyaline.

Repeated episodes of alcoholic hepatitis result in cirrhosis in a third of individuals within a few years.
