Palpation of the parotids to test for enlargement is a vital component of the clinical examination.

The patient is asked to clench his teeth so that the masseter muscle is palpable. The parotid is best felt behind the masseter muscle and in front of the ear.

Parotid enlargement is associated with alcoholic binges.
