Pituitary apoplexy is characterised by:

  • severe headache of acute onset, similar to that in subarachnoid haemorrhage
  • neck stiffness
  • rapidly progressive visual impairment
  • extraocular nerve palsies
  • primary pituitary insufficiency
  • stupor and then coma
