Reduction is required urgently and takes place with the patient under general anaesthesia. If closed reduction fails then open reduction is necessary.

After the knee joint has been reduced the knee is put in a plaster cast for about 12 weeks. Whilst the knee is in plaster, exercises of the quadriceps are encouraged.
