D+ haemolytic uraemic syndrome is the typical, enteropathic condition. Patients are infected with a verocytotoxin - producing strain of E. coli.

D+ haemolytic uraemic syndrome is uncommon, with only 150 cases reported per year in the UK, but the incidence is increasing.

Other features include:

  • commonly affects 3 months to 3 year olds
  • occurs most often in the summer in epidemics
  • typified by prodromal diarrhoea which often becomes bloody
  • 85% make a good recovery with supportive treatment
