Bacterial tracheitis is a medical emergency which may be confused with either croup or acute epiglottitis. It is caused prinicipally by Staph aureus, but there are a number of other bacteria which may be involved.

Treatment is along similar lines to acute epiglottitis, with calm, supportive measures, and using flucloxacillin as blind treatment.
