ACE inhibitors act by preventing the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II by angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Angiotensin II is important in two respects. Firstly it is a potent peripheral vasoconstrictor, both directly and via its stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, and secondly it increases production of aldosterone by the zona glomerulosa thereby increasing sodium retention and potassium excretion by the distal nephron.
