Thought insertion is the delusion that some of their thoughts are not their own but have been implanted by an outside agency.

This condition differs from the experience of the obsessional patient who may be distressed by recurrent unpleasant thoughts but is in no doubt that they originate from their own mind.

This delusion is one of Schneider's first rank symptoms for schizophrenia.
