The tracheal nerve supply can be divided into:

  • parasympathetics:
    • vagus nerve
    • recurrent laryngeal nerve
  • afferent visceral sensory: from same nerves
  • sympathetics: fibres from upper paravertebral ganglia of sympathetic trunks; innervate smooth muscle and blood vessels
