Retrograde urography is used to investigate upper urinary tract obstruction. It is conducted using a catheter passed up along the ureter into the renal pelvis at cystoscopy. It is performed in the x-ray department and usually follows ascending ureterogram studies in theatre.
The advantage of retrograde urography is the benefit gained from access to higher quality imaging compared to that available in theatre. The disadvantage is the distorting influence of the ureteric catheter.
