  • the patient's symptoms
  • the need to conserve renal tissue, for example in patients who have only one functioning kidney, which has become hydronephrotic
  • the severity of the hydronephrosis

Treatment options include:

  • restoration of patency using a double J stent
  • percutaneous nephrostomy
  • reconstructive ureteric surgery
