It is important to remember that premature babies are fragile - the immaturity of their haemopoitic system means that they bruise easily and suffer coagulopathies, such as disseminated intravascular coagulation and haemolytic disease of the newborn, with associated complications including necrotising enterocolitis and intraventricular haemorrhage.
