Hand fractures (immediate treatment)

Authoring team

A facture may be indicated by any hand injury with:

  • suspicious swelling or bruising
  • deformity or
  • significant loss of function

Management:

  • refer to A/E dept to identify significant fractures (most undisplaced fractures will be treated with splinting or strapping and so Xrays are only needed where surgical intervention is being considered)
  • immobilisation spica splint or strapping for fractured phalanges velcro hand/wrist splint for undisplaced fracture of metacarpal
  • internal fixation
