Glycogen synthase is the key enzyme in glycogenesis as it is rate-limiting; the remaining enzymes in the pathway are near equilibrium and non-saturated. Consequently, agents which alter glycogen synthase activity alter the rate of glycogenesis.
Glycogenesis is also influenced by the close relationship between glycogen synthase and glycogen phosphorylase.
