Conditions which may lower the amount of glucose in CSF include:

  • bacterial meningitis
  • HSV or mumps meningitis, each of which occur in about 20% of cases
  • subarachnoid haemorrhage
  • tuberculous meningitis
  • fungal meningitis
  • other causes of meningitis may lower the glucose
