Levator scapulae is tested in a similar manner to the rhomboid muscles. The patient is requested to sit upright, elbows flexed with the hands in the small of the back and the arms rotated externally against this resistance.

Contraction of levator scapulae may be felt in the posterior triangle of the neck.
