Tetany is a syndrome characterised by:

  • carpopedal spasm of the hands, and sometimes the feet
  • perioral paraesthesia
  • neuromuscular hyperexcitability

Occasionally there may be:

  • laryngospasm
  • psychosis
  • generalised convulsions
