The pathological features of osteoarthritis are:

  • progressive cartilage destruction
  • subarticular cysts - form in areas of greatest stress
  • subarticular sclerosis - trabeculae thickening around the cysts
  • osteophytosis - proliferation and ossification of cartilage in peripheral, unstressed areas
  • capsular fibrosis
