Cestodes are relatively uncommon in the UK. However, they represent a major health problem world-wide.

In classification, they are usually divided up based on where the various life stages mature, as follows:

  • adults in humans:
    • beef tapeworm
    • fish tapeworm

  • adults and larvae in humans:
    • pork tapeworm

  • larvae in humans:
    • hydatid disease
