Abductor digiti minimi is one of the first, most superficial layer of intrinsic muscles of the foot. It lies immediately deep to the plantar aponeurosis of the sole of the foot.

It originates from a number of contiguous structures:

  • medial and lateral processes of calcaneal tuberosity
  • plantar aponeurosis
  • intermuscular septae

It inserts into the:

  • lateral side of the base of the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe
  • lateral side of the head of the fifth metatarsal

Its actions are to:

  • flex the fifth toe
  • abduct the fifth toe
  • support the lateral longitudinal arch

It is innervated by the lateral plantar nerve (S2, S3).
