Syringobulbia is the presence of cavities in the medulla oblongata, and it occurs when syringomyelia extends into the midbrain.

As part of the pathogenesis of syringomyelia, there is a build up of fluid pressure in the syrinx, leading to pressure atrophy of grey and white matter.
