Syndactyly derives from the Greek 'syn' meaning 'together' and 'dactylos' meaning 'digit'. It describes joints that are fused together, either partially or completely. It is used commonly in the context of congenital fusion of digits but it can be applied to secondary fusion, for example after trauma or burns.
