Visual agnosias are usually caused by lesions in the parietal lobes in the visual association cortex.

There is some evidence for lateralization of visual processing:

  • lesions in the dominant parietal lobe are more likely to interfere with the understanding of:
    • objects
    • colour
    • letters

  • lesions in the non-dominant parietal lobe are more likely to interfere with the understanding of:
    • unusual views of objects
    • place
    • face recognition
