Galactosaemia cataract

Authoring team

Cataract formation is the result of excess galactose entering the lens which is converted in the lens fibres to its poorly diffusible alcohol, dulcitol. This draws water osmotically into the lens and ultimately leads to cataract formation.

The cataract develops at 4-6 months of age.
