Masked mastoiditis is a complication of the acute mastoiditis where partial treatment with antibiotics leads to failure of resolution with a low grade granular osteitis developing in the mastoid bone.

This condition may cause headache, earache and general malaise, but more often it is a silent disease. Its danger lies in the fact that it can have the same consequences as acute mastoiditis - i.e. abscess formation as a result of necrosis.
