Dialysis sessions usually last from 3 - 6 hours. In the acute situation, daily treatment may be required. In chronic renal failure, a minimum of 12 hours dialysis split over 2 - 3 sessions is necessary. Short dialysis times are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular complications. The efficiency of dialysis can be estimated from the urea clearance of the dialyser.
