  • angina patients:

  • stable angina: if coronary arteriography demonstrates one or more coronary stenoses which are suitable for dilatation

  • unstable angina: angioplasty can be used but has a higher rate of complications than if used in stable angina

  • acute myocardial infarction:
    • in specialist centres acute angioplasty improves short-term outcomes as compared to thrombolysis

  • previous coronary bypass grafts:
    • patients with stenoses of the saphenous vein or internal mammary bypass grafts can be successfully treated with coronary angioplasty
