The blackfly vector transmits the microfilaria larval form of the worm from one host to another. From this larval stage the adult form develops and resides in the subcutaneous tissues.
After fertilisation the female worm then liberates vast numbers of microfilariae into the blood, enabling them to be passed on to another blackfly vector.
