Diseases caused by pneumococci include:

  • community acquired pneumonia - the most common cause
  • acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis media, and conjunctivitis
  • meningitis - especially in skull fracture from sinuses, etc.
  • septicaemia and "occult bacteraemia" - in febrile children and endocarditis
  • septic arthritis
