The following features should be noted when observing the wrist:

  • symmetry, left vs. right

  • deformity e.g. Colles fracture and radial aplasia produce obvious radial deviation

  • swelling: ganglia, rheumatoid nodules or tumours

  • wasting: hypothenar and thenar eminences and the forearm
