Tetracycline can be used in treatment and prophylaxis for this condition; adults may be given one dose, but in children this is unproven.

Note however that an unavoidable Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction may occur in the majority of patients within a couple of hours of treatment or natural crisis. This is associated with clearance of the organism.

With treatment mortality should be less than 5%
