The pathogenesis of the different types of diabetes mellitus are quite distinct. Whilst type 1 or insulin dependent diabetes is almost certainly the result of an autoimmune process, type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetes results from a relative insulin deficiency due to a combination of both decreased insulin secretion and increased insulin resistance.
