On each side of the spine, rhomboid minor is a relatively small muscle which must be considered functionally with its partner, rhomboid major.

It passes obliquely down and laterally to insert into the scapula at its medial border near to the triangular area at the base of its spine. Throughout, it lies deep to trapezius but deep to the long spinal muscles.
