Travel may predispose to infection via:

  • injury: tetanus

  • respiratory: diphtheria and tuberculosis (also unpasteurised milk)

  • food and water: polio, typhoid, hepatitis A, cholera and traveller's diarrhoea

  • mosquito and tick malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis, bites: dengue and haemorrhagic fevers and leishmaniasis

  • animal bites: rabies, viral haemorrhagic fevers

  • sex and drugs: STD's, HIV and hepatitis B

  • other: meningitis, schistosomiasis
