General investigations for gangrene

It is important to ascertain the underlying cause of the gangrene:

  • urine and blood samples should be obtained and tested for diabetes
  • absence of rest pain and intermittent claudication, with palpable dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial pulses imply that there is no associated major arterial disease
  • radiology may reveal the presence of any osteomyelitis
  • pus should be cultured
