Ribonucleic acid is a single stranded nucleic acid molecule involved with the synthesis of proteins. Its' core structure is based around the pentose sugar ribose linking the purine bases - adenine and guanine - with the pyrimidines - uracil and cytosine.

There are several types of RNA involved in gene transcription and translation:

  • messenger RNA
  • ribosomal RNA
  • transfer RNA
