Post-herpetic neuralgia is a common and severe complication of shingles.

There are a range of definitions of post-herpetic neuroalgia, including:

  • pain which persists after the shingles rash has healed
  • pain which persists 30 days after the onset of shingles

The symptoms are usually confined to the involved dermatome and include:

  • paraesthesia
  • hyperalgesia
  • allodynia
