  • localised peritonitis: management dependent on cause, e.g. acute appendicitis necessitates urgent appendicetomy, acute diverticulitis or acute salpingitis are usually managed with antibiotics
  • generalised peritonitis: management consists of preoperative, operative and postoperative steps
